Why do I need area rugs if I have other flooring?

These rugs are small, but they serve big purposes, and one of them is to accent or highlight. They also provide texture, so go ahead and layer them over a soft or hard surface. It will make a stunning design statement. These small soft surfaces are also functional, providing insulation against noise; adding cushioning; making it easier to clean, and guarding against hard falls.

Divide and conquer with an area rug

Sometimes you want to section off a corner of a room for a library, home office, reading area, etc., and with today's modern layouts, it’s not unusual to see one big room that houses the seating and dining areas. Different but coordinating rugs will add a clear definition. Who says you can only use it on one type of flooring surface?

Here are a few design tips

  1. As in any interior design plan, follow the 60-30-10 color rule. That means the primary color, what you use for walls and upholstery, should be 60%. Secondary colors, where rugs fall, take up 30%. The remaining 10% goes to accessories, such as vases or lamps.
  2. Balance! For example, if you already have many patterns, go with something more subtle for the rug. Alternatively, if the room has many solid colors and subtle patterns, you might want to liven things up.
  3. Size properly. Ideally, a rug should be able to fit under pieces of furniture, such as sofa, chairs, and coffee table with at least 18-inches of bare floor exposed. However, if that’s not possible, the rug must be anchored by the two front legs of the furniture, with the same 18-inches of exposed floor. If the rug doesn’t fit well under a bed, use runners on each side to establish proportion.

  4. Most of all, have fun with these little gems! If you want some inspiration and a free estimate, visit the Specialty Flooring store in Coral Springs, FL., convenient to Coral Springs, Parkland, Coconut Creek, Boca Raton, and Boynton Beach. You’ll love all our area rug options.
